World Urbanization Prospects 2018

World Urbanization Prospects 2018 (2018 Revision) from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, provides revised estimates and projections of urban and rural populations for all countries worldwide and their major urban agglomerations. The dataset presents the main findings of the 2018 revision and is designed to be consistent with national total population estimates and projections from the 2017 Revision of the World Population Prospects. It is distributed through data tables, figures, maps, analyses, and technical notes, and is widely used across the United Nations and by international organizations, researchers, academic institutions, and the media to analyze and compare urbanization patterns and population dynamics over time.

The sustainability of China’s rapid urbanization is of significance in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Here we integrated Earth observation and census data to estimate the relationship between land, population and economic domains of urbanization in 433 cities over...

Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax cause most malaria cases worldwide and are co-endemic in many countries, yet differ substantially in biology and in their responses to common interventions. As programmes drive down P. falciparum, P. vivax is a growing challenge for elimination, but most mo...

Future population projections of urban agglomerations furnish essential input for development policies and sustainability strategies. Here, working within the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and using a simple urban-growth model, we estimate population trends throughout the 21st century for ~20...

The world has experienced dramatic urbanization in recent decades. However, we still lack information about the characteristics of urbanization in large cities throughout the world. After analyzing 841 large cities with built-up areas (BUAs) of over 100 km2 from 2001 to 2018, here we found an uneven...

The subtype composition of seasonal influenza waves varies in space and time. Influenza subtypes A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B tend to have different impacts on population groups; therefore, understanding the drivers of their cocirculation and anticipating their composition is important for epidemic prepared...

The rapidly rising generation of municipal solid waste jeopardizes the environment and contributes to climate heating. Based on the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways, we here develop a global systematic approach for evaluating the potentials to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants fro...
